Empowering Communities: Inside the Education Ministry of the Little Sisters of St. Francis

The Education Ministry of the Little Sisters of Saint Francis (LSOSF) is a central pillar of the congregation's mission to serve the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized. Founded in 1923 by Mother Mary Kevin Kearney ("Mama Kevina") in Uganda, the order has expanded across East Africa and globally, using holistic education as a direct engine for social transformation.

Today, the Sisters manage, lecture, and teach across an extensive spectrum of learning facilities—from early childhood development centers and special needs schools to vocational institutes and higher education institutions.

Key Pillars of the LSOSF Education Ministry

1. Higher Education & University Teaching

Beyond foundational schooling, members of the Little Sisters of St. Francis actively serve in higher education as university lecturers, administrators, and researchers across East Africa. By teaching in Catholic and secular universities, the Sisters mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students in fields such as education, nursing, social work, theology, and administration. Their academic presence ensures that ethical leadership, Franciscan values, and rigorous scholarship shape the region's next generation of professionals.

2. Inclusive & Special Needs Education

A defining hallmark of the LSOSF ministry is its dedication to children often sidelined by traditional academic systems. The Sisters operate specialized facilities for learners with physical, sensory, and intellectual disabilities—such as the St. Francis School for the Hearing Impaired in Kitale, Kenya. These institutions integrate specialized curricula with occupational, speech, and adaptive care to ensure every child reaches their full potential.

3. Early Childhood & Primary Foundation

Recognizing that community uplifting begins early, the congregation prioritizes early childhood development (ECD) and primary education in rural and under-resourced urban settlements. By offering safe learning environments, balanced nutrition, and core literacy, the Sisters build a strong foundation for lifelong academic success.

4. Vocational & Technical Skills Training

To break generational cycles of poverty, the order runs vocational and technical institutes tailored for youth and young women. Practical courses in tailoring, sustainable agriculture, business management, catering, and computer literacy equip students with marketable skills for immediate employment and financial independence.

5. Faith, Ethics, & Character Formation

In every LSOSF classroom, academic instruction is paired with spiritual growth and character formation. Rooted in Franciscan spirituality, their educational approach instills values of empathy, integrity, environmental stewardship, and community service.

Global Impact & Ongoing Mission

Through local initiatives and global partnerships—such as the Little Sisters Education Fund—the ministry provides scholarships and infrastructure upgrades to keep education accessible for impoverished students across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and beyond.

From early learning classrooms to university lecture halls, the Little Sisters of St. Francis honor Mother Kevin’s legacy, empowering thousands of youth each year through quality, value-based education.
